How can I care for my pet’s oral health?

2. Provide toys and treats that are safe for their teeth. Many owners are not aware that branches, ribs or other bones, cow hooves or tennis balls are too hard and can cause tooth damage. Instead you should look for toys that are soft to chew like rawhide or knuckle bones. You should also look for toys or foods that are “VOHC- approved” as these products clean the teeth and gums according to guidelines set by the Veterinary Oral Council.
3. Brush their teeth regularly. This can be very difficult with some pets – especially cats – but once it becomes a routine practice it gets easier. You should use a brush and paste designed for your pet. There are many flavoured pet toothpastes safe for your pet to swallow.
4. Examine their mouths regularly. By doing this you are more likely to spot dental issues before they become serious problems.
